In a startling discovery, over 100 venomous red-bellied black snakes were found in a backyard in western Sydney, Australia. Upon investigation, snake catchers uncovered a total of 102 snakes, including five adults and 97 newborns.

What Happened?

David Stein, residing in Horsley Park, western Sydney, observed multiple red-bellied black snakes entering a mulch pile in his backyard. Concerned, he reached out to Reptile Relocation Sydney. Snake catcher Dylan Cooper arrived and, over approximately three hours, discovered a total of 102 snakes—five adults and 97 newborns. The snakes were found in areas Stein had recently mulched.

Why It’s Important

The presence of such a large number of venomous snakes in a suburban area poses significant safety concerns for residents and pets. Red-bellied black snakes are venomous, and their bites can cause serious symptoms, including bleeding, swelling, nausea, and muscle pain. This incident highlights the importance of being vigilant and taking prompt action when encountering wildlife in residential areas.

What Experts Say

Snake catcher Corey Kerewaro noted the unusual nature of the find, stating, “Within a few minutes, we knew this was going to be unusual. Snake after snake, they just kept being uncovered.” He added that witnessing the collective birth of several newborns was rare. Reptile experts suggest that the mulch pile provided ideal conditions for the snakes, offering a stable temperature and environment for birthing.

What’s Next

The captured snakes were safely relocated deep inside a national park to prevent any further human interaction. Homeowner David Stein plans to remove the mulch from his yard to prevent future incidents. Experts advise residents to be “snake aware” and to consult professionals for snake removal to ensure safety.

Conclusion

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by wildlife in residential areas. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and to seek professional assistance when dealing with potentially dangerous animals.
